Hula Hoopin + Hatin' on airports

Thank you guys SOOO much for the well-wishes!

It didn't even occur to me that other cardio options would be SWIMMING - like a lot of you mentioned! Or the hand-bike machine. I've seen those at my gym but never used them before!

I've stayed off my foot since I hurt it. Thankfully, I've definitely felt an improvement and it's feeling better after almost 2 days now. I've been lightly massaging it and found that keeping it active a little bit, instead of leaving it to stiffen up, is helping a lot.

The bruiiise. You can thank me later for cutting off my toes in the picture - they are not pretty. Blaming it on running.

I've done no workouts for almost 10 days now so I decided to do some upper body strength training in my basement.

What's the best part of home work-outs for you??

My ultimate favourite is that I can roll out of bed, still with the sleepy-face look, look a mess, and simply not care!!
The fact that you don't have to travel and GET to the gym is always a great bonus, too.

I used our weighted hula-hoop to sweat it out a bit!! Anyone have one of these?

I'm not sure how much it actually weighs..but it does make a difference. It's been a super long time since I've hula-hooped. Keeping it up was a challenge at first. A great workout in front of the TV!

It feels GOOD to sweat, to move and be active a little!

Now, I'm off to the airport..because my brother is heading back to the U.K. Time just FLEW by these past 10 days or so.. Nooooooo

Are you a fan of airports / flying?? Do you travel much??

It used to be sooo exciting for me to get on a plane as a child.

Since studying + working  in the U.K and being there for 5 years, I flew back and forth from home about 4 times a year. Airports and flying got old. FAST. I simply do not like the atmosphere, the waiting, the delays, customs line-ups, the jet-lag, the little seats, the blocked ears when you're landing(ever have a cold while flying?? that is some serious discomfort/pain), the long flights. Bahh!! (that's a lot of negativity in one sentence. LOL)

HAPPY TUESDAY!!

  2. That is a giant bruise! Ouch! I rolled my ankle last time this year and it ripped part of my Achilles Tendon. I stepped on the edge of the sidewalk. It was such a stupid minor step, but caused a lot of pain. Anyway, I had to take about four weeks off of running for it to heal! Hope you are feeling better. I have started to swim a lot in the last year as a substitute for running cardio and to rehab my running ailments! Anyway, I might try a hula hoop class, there is one in my neighborhood! Hope your foot is back to normal real soon! :-)

    1. I wish my gym had a swimming pool - I've love to swim!! But, I'd be learning from scratch since it's been yeaaars though.

oh gosh, sorry to hear about your injury last year. It is FRUSTRATING when something minor and and slightly careless can cause so much pain!

    2. Luckily there is a pool near to where i live. Yes, sometimes the big injuries come when we are doing something minor and unrelated to running. Like you said, it is frustrating!

  4. I tend to fly a lot with my parents and sister in Florida (and in different parts) so between that and work and such I guess I wind up flying a decent amount. But those trips are within the US and not too long.

Your foot looks super painful. All I can say is OUCH to that bruise. I hope that you have a super speedy recovery.

I have a hula hoop...but I still have not mastered it. One day I will conquer it. I swear. I am envious of those who can hula hoop for hours on end! I'm just trying to get a full minute.

  5. Ouch -- your foot looks painful! Hope it continues to feel better. Be careful and take it easy.

I feel like at home workouts take so much less time because you don't have to travel to them, like you mentioned. Especially after a long day at work! As long as you don't let yourself get distracted by other things around the house, they are great.

  6. My sister in law loves hula hooping. I've only done it a few times when i worked at daycamp. It was fun, but I just don't think I got a lot out of it. Maybe if I tried to take it a little more seriously.

I love your dark chambray shirt! Mine is too light, I think I might need a new one.

  7. Ooo, that is one killer bruise! Happy to hear it's feeling better!

Aww man, I can't believe your bro is already going home!

I am so over airports too. Mostly the hustle of the other people. It seems to bring out the worst in people!

  9. Oh my :S Hope your foot gets better! Swimming is amazing! It's a cardio and strength workout put into one. I used to love hula hooping but my hoop was very light weight so it wasn't too big of a workout. Skipping is fun too especially when you make into a game!

  10. Ouch!!! Get healed soon!!!

I like airports and travelling :-) Even with delays!

  11. Happy healing (meant to say that sooner). I literally feel your pain (though mine's in the knee...bleugh). And yes, airports suck. I remember when it used to be fun to travel. No longer.

  15. Sooo sorry to hear about your foot!! UGH. That would frustrate me so badly. I admire your ability to stay off it and be positive about it, at least that's the way it seems!! I haven't hula hooped in years! HAHA!

  16. You didn't mention if you went to a doctor. Did you get xrays to make sure you didn't fracture anything, or avulse some ligaments? Ice and elevate! Feel better real soon!

    1. thanks so much for your wishes! It is MUCH better now..although I'm staying off running for a few more days just until it feels completely normal.
i didn't go to the doctor, but my dad (who's a doctor) saw it happen and checked me out a bit and was confident it wasn't fractured. It it didn't get better though, definitely would have gotten xrays!

  17. Time does fly, seems like your brother just got there! I about fainted about the toes...too funny! I agree about no traveling issues for at home workouts! I just love the gym though. I'll reserve at home workouts for new born baby days..if that ever gets here!

  18. I did an at home workout this morning - I LOVE not caring about what I am wearing... I totally just wore my sports bra. WOWZA on that bruise! Holy cow! Get better!

    ReplyDelete
  19. aw hope your foot feels better soon! I HATE airports. I'm totally fine with flying, but for some reason I get major anxiety in airports

    ReplyDelete
  20. I loved flying the first (and only time) i've done it! It was really stress free and the seats were amazing to sleep in :) I went to Florida with my volleyball team, it was a great bonding experience!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Glad things are feeling better, and you got to sneak a workout in. That always helps - at least the mental well-being! :)

Airports...I love how they facilitate my travel just about anywhere in the world in under 24 hours. That is amazing. Of course, there are plenty of less-than-glorious parts of that, but I'm pretty willing to accept those in the trade-off. We travel quite a bit: husband & I lived on opposite sides of the US for 6 years, plus our families are on 2 different continents, plus we love to travel, so...we've got quite a few frequent flier miles under our belts. Planning our next trip back to the US - excited enough that I doubt I'll mind the airport!

    ReplyDelete
  22. That is one sore looking bruise, ouch!!! Hopefully it looks worse than it is.
I hate travelling but love getting to the destination...not fun flying with 2 kids who need entertainment!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Omg u poor thing! I can't believe you rolled your foot so bad!!! Feel better soon!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Holy ouch! I haven't read the comments on your last post, but did anyone suggest rowing? It might not work because there is some pressure on the foot/ankle, but maybe at a pretty easy intensity it would work?

I don't mind airports. I like to people watch, wander around, and then settle down with a book somewhere. My Mom always says that the airport is one of the few places she can read uninterrupted, with nothing else that she 'should' be doing hanging over her head!

    ReplyDelete

    1. No one did mention rowing - that is FANTASTIC. I haven't done it in YEARS since I just always seem to chose running. thanks!

  27. I love the time saved working out at home!!! That is my favorite perk...or having my own bathroom only feet away! Your foot looks...interesting. I hope it feels 100% soon! I don't mind airports because the people watching is usually great and it usually means I am headed somewhere warm!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. You poor thing that bruise looks bad! I used to get so excited going to the airport as a kid too! I love going places but the whole travelling between places is tiring!! Sad your bro is leaving!
Can you hula hoop? That is awesome! I'm so jealous!!! I am so bad with a hoop but I LOVE it!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Glad you got a little sweat on! Weighted hula hoops sounds painful? Maybe I'm imagining it wrong. Your poor little footy, I hope it is at 200% soon! Safe travels to your brother!

    1. It may hurt a little at first, but after a few tries, you get used to it. It's a GREAT ab workout!

      Delete
  30. Aye, that looks seriously painful! I'm glad it's feeling better.

I tried a weighted hula hoop that had, like, all these rounded spikes pointing inwards, and it was THE most painful thing ever. I don't know why, but I tried to use it multiple times because I kept forgetting how much it hurt. Not sure what the point of the spikes are! I love regular hula hoops, though.

Home workouts are nice because you can look particularly horrendous/wear significantly less clothing if it's hot. Also, obviously, saving the time it takes to get to the gym.

Love airports (so many interesting people!), hate flying. It's an irrational but very real fear!

    ReplyDelete

    1. hmm wow, i'm tryna figure out why they'd put spikes on a hula hoop?!?! Lol ouch!!

  31. OMG!! I'm so sorry that you got hurt! That looks extremely painful. I hope you get better soon!!

Great job finding ways to be active while you are not able to run!

Also, I have a weird obsession with airports... they are actually one of my favorite places to be. I love the stores, and find almost all magazines more interesting at airport stores than at regular convenience stores. I love the moving sidewalks. And I definitely love people watching at airports.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hi I hope you get better soon!!! this pic of your foot looks painful!!! I hope you are doing well for not being able to run!! The best way to stay in shape is find alternatives eventhough they are not always as fun as running :-)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ah so sorry to hear about your foot- what a killjoy in the midst of your training! However I'm glad that you're making the most of the situ by trying alternate forms of exercise! When I injured my foot last year and had to take a timeout from exercise, I kept up my cardio with the arc trainer and it definitely helped me maintain my fitness levels- the transition back to running 6 weeks later was much better than expected!

Airports drive me nuts as well :-(. Going somewhere is usually exciting though. Coming home is always a real pain!

Airports, ughh. Never know what you're going to get!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Although I fly pretty often, I don't mind flying at all!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I flew all the time as a kid, so yeah, airports got old fast. It's still the easiest way to get places, but ugh, the HASSLE. Takes clothes off, put clothes on, put this is bags, take this out of bags, get there early, your flight leaves late...Oi.

And OUCH! That's quite the bruise you're sporting! Heal up fast--and have fun hula-hooping in the meantime ;)

I actually love airports- they are exciting to me!! :) I hope you have a great day!

  40. Holy moly - look at the bruising!! Are you sure nothing is broken? :( I'm glad it's starting to feel a little better though - definitely a good idea not allowing it to get stiff...I think you're right in that it'll hurt a lot more if it does. But just take it easy. Most important thing is that it heals :)

I've never used a weighted hula-hoop before. Or actually even heard of them! I'm intrigued. I kinda wanna get one so I can feel like a little kid again, yet actually get a workout from it haha

  61. I love hula hooping! That's our family exercise. We have about ten hoops, and we get them out and roll them around. Do you ever do arm hooping? If you get on youtube, you can find tons of tutorials for hula hoop tricks. It's awesome!

  63. I think I've done the same thing to my ankle before, though not as bad. No fun! Good job staying off it for awhile. I know it's hard to stay away when you're so motivated to run, but better to chill and not make an injury even worse. At least you were out of commission while your brother was home :)

Travel is what I spend all my fun money on, although it's definitely not as glamorous as it used to be. We try to take one big trip and a few little trips a year. Flying is a hassle, but it's worth it once you get there.

Hope you're back to 100% soon!

However, what about this? what if you added a little content?
I mean, I don't want to tell you how to run your website, however suppose you added a post title that grabbed a person's attention?

You could peek at Yahoo's front page and note how they create post titles to get viewers to click. You might add a video or a picture or two to get readers excited about what you've
got to say. Just my opinion, it might make your blog a little livelier.
