Running / Meditation

{Weekend Workouts}

Saturday: 5 miles + Weights

Sunday: 10.1 miles = 1:41:6
___________________________________________

My Saturday run was a lazy-feeling 5 miles..but I did get in a great strength-training session. I secretly really love that day-after sore feeling!

Sunday, I did 10.1 miles while watching the NBA All-stars game. That's the only reason I made it through. It was a slow 10 miles and I mentally found it veeery tough. I had to stop for a water and a get-yourself-together break after 6 miles.

Before:

After: we'll just say my skin is "glistening" and not crazily sweating:

I am badly due a LONG run.
My head has not been in it lately and I'm really not sure why. My legs feel completely fine, so that's not an excuse!

I am SO impressed with everyone who follows a training plan and gets those long runs done regardless of how you're feeling. I think that is absolutely incredible. That consistency is what I lack.

Do you run on an incline?

I keep mine at a simple 0.5%. But, I'm going to start to really crank it up to mimic hills since I'm doing so much treadmill running!

Anyone regularly meditate??
Are you a worrier?

My part-time job is Worrier. Let me tell you, I do it WELL - I need a raise.

I stress, worry, get into bad cycles of sleep (or, unable to). It's just crappy!

I have a terrible habit of worrying about things in the future (work, friendships, family) - which does nothing for the present. I'm trying to really get into the frame of mind of living in the now and taking it all in. Life is always going to have it's stressful points - it's about how you handle it, right?

I've been interested in meditation and relaxation techniques. My friend (who's like my personal library), has let me borrow this book:

I'm about to start on it and really looking forward to it!

  1. That's a great thing that you are highly motivated! I also tend to worry, but it doesn't pay:)

  2. You are motivated! And lets be honest the same things don't work for everyone. Do what works for you in your schedule and how your body feels. Running is for you!

  3. NBA Allstar game is about the only way I could run that long! Meditation is good for the soul and should reduce your worry rants! Hope the book is helpful.

  4. happy family day holiday! i hope you are off, TR!
i do the TM at 0.5 or 1% incline. that's fine with me - i get lotsa hills when i run outside.
i have found that yoga really helps me to stay in the moment and not worry/get anxious. it's the deep breathing and the mindfulness, i think! the book sounds interesting, please let us know what you think when you're done!

Yesss, i've been practicing the breathing and trying to block everything else out..

  5. Sometimes those breaks are what you need. Good for you for pushing through the distance. Let me know how that book is. I am a worrier (sp?) as well but meditation doesn't seem like something I could sit still for.

  6. How long of a long run are you talking about? 10 sounds pretty long to me!

    1. I feel like I should definitely be breaking my wall of 13.1 by now, you know? Since I've been stuck on that for a while. I feel like I should be pushing past comfort at this point!

  7. I love your pictures! Yesterday after driving 12 hours I didnt feel like running at all but the weather was nice *Cold but sunny* and the long run has to be done...I told my husband to pick me up after 2 hours so I had no excuses to stop I run 2 hours :-) sometimes you need to push yourself that way... If I run around the house most likely I would have stopped earlier...

    1. GREAT run and an even better idea on how to get it done! I agree with you - my problem is not pushing myself right now.

  8. I hear you on worrying about the future. It takes practice to learn how to be in the moment and live for today. Yoga has helped me!

  9. I did 10 miles yesterday too :)I'm training for a half in April and I'm not really following a plan, just doing 1 day of hills, 1 day of speed, and a long run. I'm not much of a worrier myself, but I hope the book helps you!

    1. No real training plan here either (but this might be a huge, huge mistake eventually..we will see, haha!)
      Great running!

  10. Running with people who are counting on me keeps me consistent and accountable. For long runs anyway. It also makes me go out regardless of the weather. Build yourself a running crew! Check out the Running Room:) I'm a worrier too. I worry about things that are not even worry worthy!

  11. I am prepping for my second half marathon (the first was a fluke literally) and I am getting worried and nervous because I seem to not be able to run anymore! any advice on what sort of plan i should do? the race end of may...and if i am trianing inside in a 0.5% incline enough?
PS I have a giveaway happening right now! hope you'll enter SO Fresh and So Clean Giveaway

  12. I have never ran 10 miles before!
I think it is awesome that you just go to the gym and run double digit miles! Maybe after I run this half marathon I will feel the motivation too :)

  13. I am a total worrier & expected it to get worse after I had my baby but it's been the exact opposite! I am a calmer & more focused person with her. I don't stress about the little things... there's just too much to get done. I hope it lasts because I've actually gotten a lot of compliments about how motherhood suits me.

    1. That is SO nice to hear. I'm so glad the baby has been a blessing in so many ways!

  14. OH I love him he has such great advice to help us all get out of our own way!! I actually love long runs, so I've had to switch my brain to start enjoying speed work too

  15. I love having a plan they make me happy. Plus I love structure and they fit into my type A personality.

I also love that you don't consider 10 miles going long. I did 11 yesterday on the treadmill and was wishing I could run outside and really go for a long run.

I am also very capable of stressing myself out with worry...that is why running is my outlet. A run can really help ease my mind and put things into perspective.

    1. yesss to running being an outlet. I'd be an even (bigger) mess without it!!

  16. Awesome runs this weekend! Sometimes it's hard to mentally commit for longer runs. Sometimes it's easier for me to focus on just finishing the next mile, telling myself I can quit when I hit the next mile split, and then generally I can keep pushing myself to run one more. I don't run on an incline on the treadmill because I gave myself an Achilles injury doing that once. If I'm really worried about my effort I'll run a little faster, but generally I try to keep an eye on my heart rate and just run at the proper heart rate.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. oh gosh! Sorry to hear about the past injury, I'll be careful about that.
I'm going to take that advice and tell myself just a liiiiiittle while longer the next time I cut a run short!

      Delete
  17. Love reading about your running! I am not sure what you mean by not being consistent because you sure appear to me! I wish I could run for more than 6.4 miles (thats the most Ive ever done). Working towards that...

Is funny how you said your friend is your own personal library lol. I've heard of that book before and may have read an excerpt or two a while ago. Please share the feedback on it when you are done. :)

  18. Oh my gosh I worry all.the.time. I mostly worry about work and stress out about it even at home. So annoying.

Way to stick in there and finish the treadmill run!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yeahhhh I don't really stick to my workout sched... Ever. It's sort of like a "guideline" lol. I don't really worry, but I do yoga for meditation. Stretching, breathing, strength, calm, I like to think of it as multi-tasking. I can't stomach the idea of sitting still. So look to see if your gym has any group classes! I think you'd love it

  20. You are looking so great! All that running has your legs looking H-O-T. I'm a little jealous, I won't lie.

I totally do the incline thing. I bump it up to 1%. I have dreams of being able to power up a 3% climb, but I think that day is a long way from now!

    ReplyDelete
  21. That's so funny about your skin "glistening" instead of sweating. It was one of my friends birthdays this weekend and I made her homemade version of the shirt that says "I don't sweat, I Sparkle" so that reminded me of it!

I'm such a worrier, too. It seems like a full time job! I really need to work on this.

  22. 10 miles on the treadmill is impressive. Way to go! I'm not a treadmill fan, but I also have the benefit of not needing indoor running because of living in Florida. Some would argue the point in summer, but I dislike the treadmill enough that I run outside anyway. It's a different story, I'm sure, in Toronto.

    1. Once that spring weather kicks in, I don't think I'm ever gonna wanna see that treadmill again in life!!
Kinda super jealous about you living in Florida - a good friend of mine went for the first time a few months ago and absolutely fell in love with it!

  23. i can never run on a treadmill incline, kills me! you just have to think about how good you'll feel after that long run, that's what i do :) i'm totally a worrier!! i really think that yoga would help me, but i have yet to try it lol

    1. Try yoga! So good to MAKE yourself have a minute of peace (plus it's a great workout). :)
The inclines are tough, I agree!

  24. My favorite cure for a "mental workout slump" is registering for a race. Nothing totally crazy, just something you'll have to work a little bit for -like maybe a half-marathon? Even if it's still a few months off...everyone wants to get to the starting line feeling prepared!!

I don't *really* meditate, but I *do* ask myself, "What good will it (worrying) do?" Usually, the answer is "not a whole lot". So I try to think of something more productive to do, that will actually do something to alleviate the worry. This is still NOT my natural state, but I also happen to be married to someone who is, like, the anti-worrier. So that gives me something to aspire to... Good luck in your quest for calm! :)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thank you for the advice! And that must definitely help to be married to someone that can balance things out like that!
You've just reminded me about races - there's a half in April/May I'm needing to register for! :D

  25. Girl, you are the cutest thing. Stylin at the gym, I like it. Way to rock those miles.

I typically run at 1.5% bc I read somewhere that's the most like the road. But I prolly should double check, lol.

I cannot follow a training plan half of the time - life (aka baby Max) gets in the way!

    1. When my boys were younger I cannot imagine running at all. I'm in such awe and admiration for all of you moms out there with young ones.
Yes, "momming" a pre-teen and a just-now-a-teen is time consuming work, but it's very very different. Hats off to you, training program or not!

  27. I keep my incline at .5% too. Dread mills are so hard! I have been thinking about meditation for a while, I hope that book helps, I'll have to look into it. Sometimes I feel like my head is going to explode from stress.

  28. Great job finishing the 10-miler this weekend. You have been logging a lot of runs lately -- maybe you need a rest day to get you excited for a longer run? And, although you've been crushing it on the treadmill, maybe you'll be more excited when you can do those long runs outside?

I'm not much of a worrier. But I think living in the moment is important. Let us know what you think of the book after you read it.

    1. I think you're right about both - a little break and get outside running again. The weather is sooo unappealing, but the next run WILL be outside!!

  29. I am DEFINITELY a worrier, but lately I've been reminding myself that every thing happens for a reason and that every thing will work out the way that it's supposed to. It's probably cut my worrying by like 15%.. which is better than nothing!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I worry about everything!! I have to calm down and remember that sometimes I stress myself out for nothing. Plus less worry equals less stress which equals less zits!!

  31. Oh I LOVE your workout outfit, even if you are "glistening"

  34. I'm an epic worrier too! It really doesn't help me at all. But I can't help it! I'll be interested to hear how you find that book. I would love to meditate but struggle with making time for it.
10 miles on the treadmill seems so long to me!! But I know you go farther, still I don't know how y'all do it!

    1. I love yoga for that, too. I like that it is hard work and that you have to focus on being present in order to keep your balance or hold your pose. Afterwards I feel REALLY STRONG from head to toe.

    2. I think I need to ive yoga another chance. I went a couple of times, and although it felt good, I never kept it up at the time because of expensive classes. But, they're bringing it free to my gym soon!

  37. I like the IDEA of meditation but the one class I took on it (I needed a PE credit for school) did not win me over. I vividly remember having to stare at a candle flame for five minutes WITHOUT BLINKING. It was torture. I did not feel cleansed as I was supposed to. Were I able to "close my mind," I would be interested to use it to help me fall asleep, though (although I guess part of meditation is learning how to do just that!).

  38. I try to run outside whenever I can... and in Flagstaff that means lots of inclines. When I'm on the treadmill I start at 1% so that when I get mad about having to be on the treadmill I can lower to 5% or flat. I feel like I'm "doing something" about the "abuse" I'm putting up with on the treadmill. Silly.

  40. I love that day-after sore feeling, too!! Great job on the 10 miles!

I worry, too, but try to pray through my fears and trust in God's goodness and His plan.

  41. you're so awesome! love that work out outfit too!

  42. 10 miles on the treadmill? It's awesome you only needed one get yourself together break! I usually do an incline between 1.5 & 3.5, I find it really depends on the treadmill. Your blog (as usual) makes me miss running so much. as for trainig plans... You just have to make yourself follow it or know you wont be able to reach your time goals.

  43. Okay, sounds like you need to get away somewhere scenic and just run and enjoy the surroundings :) I meditate, and I strongly recommend two things to get started. (1) find a dharma hall and try group meditation to get started. It's a great way to learn more about the practice and the serenity of the environment will encourage you to let go a bit during your sitting. (2) podcasts by Tara Brach are my favorite, and often include a guided meditation. More at: http://www.tarabrach.com/

Great job getting the run done on the treadmill even when you weren't feeling it! That's more than I could ever do on a treadmill!

  45. I think meditation and taking time with your thoughts is very powerful. I have never been very good at it though. I struggle keeping still and really just shutting my mind down. Awesome job on the runs, I would for sure add some incline to some of the runs to get you used to hills when you get back outside!

  46. No great advice on stress. I usually run when I am stressed, but now that I can't run I swim, but it doesn't do the same trick!
