Wednesday, Outside: 10 miles - 1:43:25 5.8m/h(10:20ish pace??)
________________________________________________
I woke up this morning and did my own little planking / squating / push-up'ing (??) routine at home.
After yesterday's snowy -20 something weather, I checked today and saw that it was -15. You know you're Canadian when you get excited that it "warmed up" to -15.
Out the door I went for 10miles!
1.) Because of the snow yesterday, SO much of the sidewalks were not cleaned. It was teeerrible running conditions. The first 4.7 miles was slushy, snowy, slippery & slow.
My shoes at the end of the run. ick:
2.) Miles 5-10 , I did NOT listen to any music. This simply has never happened before. And look, I survived!!
3.) My leg-recovery time has seriously improved. I used to really feel the soreness after a long run, but everything snaps right back to normal now and I feel like I could run another 10 tomorrow!
4.) FUELING.
What do you consume/eat for fueling?
What running distance do you always fuel at?? (Example if it's 13+ total miles you plan on running etc..)
WHEN do you fuel?? At what mile of your total run?
I have NEVER done any type of fueling. I've never eaten anything during a run. My stomach is pretty sensitive so I always worry that it'll just sit really badly.
The half marathons I run, or any run basically, the only thing I've ever consumed would be water and gatorade (at races).
At the end of the day, I know everyone is different and I'm just going to have to experiment to find something for me. I just have nooo idea where to start so any recommendations is appreciated! If I can find something chocolatey and that agrees with me, I will be goooooood.

I finally saw Silver Linings Playbook last night!
Who's seen this?? Did you like it?
*Clears throat for my budding movie reviewing career*
When doing all my studies for this Pharmacist career thingy that I chose, I've always been very intrigued and interested in mental health - things like bipolar, schizophrenia, depression etc. The medication/treatments and mechanisms always interested me.
I thought it was a pretty good movie. I seriously enjoyed it during the movie..but after it was over and I thought about it, I wasn't sure if it was REALLY as good as it was hyped up to be?? Maybe a bit anti-climatic?? There were some things I was a bit confused about towards the end as well.
I thought the acting was great though. I think Bradley Cooper did a wonderful job in this. Highly impressed. I really enjoyed the relationship/scenes between Cooper and his mom and dad. Very real. I thought the general dialogue and interactions between Cooper and J.Lawrence was very realistic as well.
I'd definitely recommend it!

I really want to see that!
ReplyDeleteWTG on your 10! I usually fuel if I am going to 10. GUs typically work for me, as long as I've not eaten anything weird before. But I eat real food too - like vegan fig newtons, potatoes (at my ultra). I never drink sports drinks while I run.
I tried some chews once for a long run. They made me cramp up. I also have tried raisens. Big mistake again. I went back to just gatorade but I know I will have to find something when I'm training for the marathon. Way to get in 10 miles in that junky weather/conditions!
ReplyDeleteI get terrible stitches when I drink Gatorade before or during runs. I love it after, though. I haven't run a long enough distance to require during-run fueling, but I think I'd try the Gu things first, to be on the safe side. Solid foods would make me nervous to try, as my tummy is a bit sensitive as well. I usually try to run on as empty a stomach as possible.
ReplyDeletePS You're looking fabulous my dear! And I'm super impressed with your distances! Nice that your legs aren't killin you too. Way to go!
I give you mad props for running in the COLD & with NO tunes, that is bada$$! I have only fueled during halves & even then it's just a Gu or 2. I'm too paranoid of how it will impact my stomach. "Silver Lining Playbook" is on my list to see, we just saw "Zero Dark Thirty" & it was pretty good. Hope it warms up soon for all of us!
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought the "feels like 7" in NYC today was bad! I stayed holed up allll day. So 10 miles is awesome. Especially five miles w/o music. Sometimes I like running without music, because it allows you to tune in to the self-talk. Those shoes are the sign of a real runner though! Hard core
ReplyDeleteBut I don't run far enough to have to worry about fuel quite yet. I know it's like a GU every hour. And they have chocolate flavors ;)
Awesome job on the 10 mile run, especially in those conditions! Sounds like your running is going so well. :)
ReplyDeleteI am not a big fan of gels and other fueling options. I don't take anything on runs under 15 miles. If it is over 15, I might take a gel at around 10 miles or so. I also have a sensitive stomach, though, so never want to take things unless its a long run... I'd recommend trying a bunch of different things (gels, chews, honey stingers, gummy bears, etc) and see how it works for you!
oooh... what's a honey stinger?
DeleteCongrats on the run! Do you only wear compression socks and capris? I wear wool socks when the temp dips below 30, and even then my toes are cold!
ReplyDeleteI eat clif shot bloks around mile ten. Or whenever I get hungry, which can sometimes be mile three. I figure it's best to have food on me.
I saw Silver Linings Playbook. I enjoyed it. It was cute. But I didn't walk away from it feeling like I had just taken a glimpse into something profound. Maybe I didn't get it?
So, yeah I just figured out when you talk about temps, you are using C instead of F. I was like "she must be CRAZY!" until I realized. I am all about running in the cold, but even I have limits when it gets into the negatives in Farenheit.
ReplyDeleteOoooooh.
DeleteI am so impressed that you ran that distance in those temps! Way to go, girl! :)
ReplyDeleteOh cool! One of my friends really wanted to watch the movie but due to logistics we didn't go :( The trailer looked amazing though ^^
ReplyDeleteYou ran in that weather? I'm not going to lie but I skipped out on my walk to the go bus stop and just took the local bus. Girl that's determination.
Yeah I bring snacks with me when I run 10km+. My stomach can pretty much handle anything so I bring anything. Usually something simple though like raisins, cranberries, or juice...
Dang girl, I can't believe you ran outside I'm that! Ballsy. But way to go! For fueling I either don't have anything or sometimes I'll go with Sports Beans or gu. Most of the time nothing though because it ends up making me feel queasy.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for getting out and running in that weather! I did like Silver Linings Playbook but was kind of surprised about all the attention it's been getting. I agree that Bradley Cooper did a great job, especially since it was so out of his element.
ReplyDeleteI have never really fueled before, and that goes with carb depletion. I am not sure I like that strategy, so I am going to start fueling on long runs and see how that goes. Some people say to do your long runs like a dress-rehearsal for a race (my buddy who is in the military and is an Iron man follows this idea). I have my new camelbak, so I will start taking that on my 7 miler this weekend and use it for all my long training runs to get used to the feel and weight. Then, by the time I need fuel, I can throw those in.
ReplyDeleteIve personally never fueled during a race!! Maybe I should think about it next time I do a long run. I cant believe u ran in -15 weather. Is FREEEZZIINNNGGG IN NYC. I cant even imagine running in this type of weather (and im pretty sure is warmer than how it is in canada). You def inspire me to get moving!
ReplyDeletePS; Never heard of that movie (maybe im living under a rock?) will try and find it!
I have a notoriously awful stomach. My current half PR is actually WITH having to stop for the bathroom hah! That being said I knew undertaking marathon training part of it would be learning how to eat and run. I usually run on an empty stomach and do not intake at all. It's been a bit of trial and error and i literally spent 3 months figuring it out/getting my stomach used to fueling while running. Safe to say I am a lot better off now and hoping to make it through the marathon without any bad stomach behavior! So best advice is try it all until you find what sticks!
ReplyDeleteten miles in the snow, you must be Canadian - I cannot imagine!!!! I also did a weights workout at home today but followed it up with a walk, so you're ahead of me:)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to see this on Sunday! I'm glad that you liked it and recommend it. I think that Bradley Cooper is one of the hottest men alive so I think I will enjoy it no matter what =)
ReplyDeleteyes, yes he really is.
DeleteI fuel when I'm running 8+ miles and I use Gatorade Goo (I choke and get out of breath when I have to chew something?!?!?). I fuel every 45 minutes or so. I love to add "ing" to words to make them more user-friendly. "Push-up'ing" is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI don't eat before a race due to stomach issues. I only drink water and gatorade on the course. Once I tried a gel but didn't really notice a difference. I do carb load the night before since I don't eat anything in the morning. This is for half marathon distances.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you liked the movie. I plan on seeing it soon and haven't heard any reviews about it yet.
I absolutely cannot stand Bradley Cooper, but I'm really excited to see Silver Linings Playbook! It looks fantastic!
ReplyDeleteYay for your long run in all that snow! I'm jealous- I LOOOOVE snow!
My stomach is usually crazy for me, and I'm still learning what type of fueling works for me. I do know that candy corn does NOT work. :)
Running on unplowed/shoveled sidewalks can be pretty rough! I always go for shotbloks if I need to fuel (margarita-flavored are pretty awesome!), but I can't have anything too crazy because of a sensitive stomach. Gatorade always makes me feel terrible, though-I read somewhere that the sugar (or whatever else is in it) can really mess with your stomach.
ReplyDeleteYou are getting so fast and your recovery is amazing!!! Love your runners! Coloured shoes are the best!!!
ReplyDeleteI find running without music is much better as you can concentrate on your breathing more. Don't think I would like to run in that sort of weather though, and the risk of injury could be hightened. you look great by the way
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteThere's this rare(for me) feelin of being "zoned out" that I REALLY enjoy during runs. I finally found it again when I ran without music. You are very right - definitely much more focused on form and breathing!
i have note yet seen this movie but would like to!
ReplyDeletenice run!! try clif shots in chocolate or vanilla or pb GU -> yum!! and try taking one about 45-60 minutes into your run. you'll feel a renewed energy within minutes!
it's only -10 right now - yippee!!
oooh thanks for the tip!!
DeleteI don't usually do any fueling.. Sometimes on longer runs I'll bring something just in case, but I don't usually end up eating it
ReplyDeleteglad to hear running is better :) i don't refuel during a run, i too have a sensitive stomach and could just see it going all wrong. after upping my mileage to 10-15 miles, i'm now use to the hunger that is bound to happen every run, and it doesn't even faze me now, probably not good lol but it works for me. yay!!! i was afraid that movie wasn't really going to be as good as everyone kept saying, now at least i know it is worth seeing!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! I'm seeing this tonight with the boyfrannd after class!
ReplyDeleteOoh- yay for the pharmacy reference!! I am a pharmacist also.... and working tonight ;).
ReplyDeleteGreat job on getting that run done in the slushy snow!
Good review - I wasn't sure if I should wait for it on DVD:)
ReplyDeleteWay to rock those miles, very important as you know to be careful in the crazy conditions. Looking perfectly cute as always for your workouts!
Wow! Your serous motivation! I don't even like to go outside now and it's still in the positive numbers!! One day I will try running again you make it sound fun, and I hate running!! But I've always wanted to be a runner and experience the runners high when you really get into it sounds so freeing!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I don't think I could get outside and run 10 miles in that weather. Last weekend I ran in the coldest weather I've ever run in, and that was like 17 degrees fahrenheit. I did some math and -15 celsius = 5 degrees fahrenheit. Chilly!
ReplyDeleteI also have never fueled during a race before, but I'll obviously enjoy reading the other comments you get here!
YAY for you in the frigid temps and I complain about 25 degrees. LOL.. Fuel before a race usually = wheat english muffin with peanut butter and a piece of string cheese;)
ReplyDeleteHahaha And I thought it was cold here...I'm not sure I could survive up there! :) Fueling for me has always been tricky - I have a funny thing too and get nervous -- I do well with Honey Stinger chews and waffels (those are on the bike days) and oranges. It sounds funny but it works for me! I haven't seen that movie yet...I really want to. I want to see if it is as good as everyone says!
ReplyDeleteWow, heat wave!! Good for you for getting out there. I'm afraid I've wimped out here. As for fuel, I've never once had something to eat on a run, not even during my half marathon. I just don't get hungry!
ReplyDeleteTotally get you - I've never gotten hungry during a run either! I'm just wondering if I force some calories in, it'll make the run even better?!
DeleteLOL @ 'you are a Canadian when you are excited about -15'
ReplyDeleteI can barely walk a 5K...so as usual I will say Kudos to you, and gooo LOL
Hahaha I loved the cold weather joke! Good job on the 10 miles btw! I have not ran that long yet!
ReplyDeleteWhen I am just doing long runs I will have a CLIF bar or something of that nature in my pocket in case I get hungry. I have a sensitive tummy too - so I usually have a light meal before and sometimes I get hungry.
ReplyDeleteBefore a race I will always have eat a bigger meal hours before and about 40 minutes before a race will have some sort of energy gummy, bar or gel. I really like these gummies - but I've had powerbars before too and they work just as good.
During a half marathon I will have GU Gels ( I think that is what they are called?). I eat one every 45 minutes or so. Weird fact - normally I stay clear of the gatorade during 5K or 10K races, but during a half - I really feel the need for some gatorade!
ooooh thanks so much for your insight!
DeleteI just simply do not eat anything before a long run - I might need to change that and see how I feel. I always eat a pretty big meal the night before!
I can't run without some sort of fuel - would die (well not really) :-)
DeleteI am so curious about what you eat AFTER a run! I am so famished when I work out, all I want is calories!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about anyone else, but after a "long"(for me is about 10+) run, I'm usually not hungry until a few hours later..then, I love my pasta - and lots of it! It's what I've been used to for a long time now!
DeleteIt took me a while to get used to fueling and sometimes I still struggle with it. A lot of people like Gu or other gels (my husband loves the chocolate flavor!) but I have never been able to get over the texture. I usually use clif shot bloks. During marathon training I started eating power bars during the run, which I actually liked a lot! I felt like the increase in calories helped. Play around with it to see what you like the best.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, you are amazing for doing 10 miles in that freezing weather! Way to rock it!!
Thought of a couple more things:
Delete-I try to stop eating a few hours before a long run. So, if I'm running first thing in the morning, or on race day, I sometimes get up and eat then go back to bed for a few hours. Seems to help me digest a bit before actually racing.
-during long runs/races, I think it is good to start fueling before you feel like you're out of energy. I try to have something every couple miles, but probably start around mile 4-5.
The gels and goos are so difficult for me because of the texture! I recently tried the Sport Jelly Beans. Much, much better. I also work in a field where mental health is front and center (disability services at a university). It's a dynamic landscape for sure.
ReplyDeleteI hear that a lot about gels and their texture. I'm very curious to try it to see how it goes for me!
Delete10 miles and half of it without music? You go, girl! I really want to see Silver Linings it looks sooo good!
ReplyDeleteGo go see it! I would love to hear others opinions on it!
DeleteI would perish in -15 (and colder) - I was miserable today in +20 to +30!
ReplyDeleteI like shot blocks for fuel or just a protein bar to chomp on when I start getting hungry during my runs. I only plan to bring fuel if I'm running farther than 10 miles. And I only fuel when I start to feel hungry (OR around 12 miles ... whichever comes first). Generally I eat half a protein bar 30 minutes before I go for my run and take the rest along with me in case I get hungry along the way :) I can NEVER eat the recommended servings for shot blocks. I take max 2 during a run no matter how long it is.
I haven't seen this movie, but I want to. I will wait for it to come out to redbox though!! I don't fuel on runs either, I know that I will have a hard time digesting. A few times I have taken a few bites from granola bars, or shot blocks, but that's it for me!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was running double digit distances, I used to fuel with raisins during my run- they were easy on the stomach and gave me instant energy...after the 5-mile mark, I'd pop in a few every 2-3 miles and I definitely noticed an improvement in energy levels. Like you said, it's' a case of trial and error rand finding what works for you!
ReplyDeleteoooh raisins! I would have NEVER thought of that - thank you!
DeleteMan that is cold!! Good for you for staying motivated!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want chocolate, the Gu Chocolate Outrage is acceptable. I've also done Chocolate #9, but it's not a sweet chocolate at all. My fuel of choice is Carb Boom Vanilla Orange. I can only tolerate gels and I like the texture and taste combo of that one the best. You might also want to check how much caffeine is in the gels you try if you are susceptible to it or running later in the day.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment!I still need to see the movie
ReplyDeletewould you like to follow each other?
XOXO

I take the gels during a long run but I have always wondered if I could go without. I guess I always heard people say that you have to fuel after an hour of running that I just started doing it.
ReplyDeleteNice work I did a 10 mile run today! It felt amazing! Keep up good work.
ReplyDeleteFor long runs, I take 2 Clif Shot Bloks....usually around mile 5. GU gels make me gag... I have to choke them down, yuck! For my half, I carried 4 shot bloks, only ate two. Pre race I usually have 1-2 Tbsp of peanut butter sprinkled with mini semi sweet choc chips.....sometimes a mini bagel or English muffin too.
ReplyDeleteRunning without music?!? I can't imagine. :)
Great job on your run!
My friend uses regular gummy bears or candy corn for her runs. She likes that both are easy to carry....just an idea.
DeleteAfter my long runs, I usually eat a banana.
Ok. I just remembered.... Jellybeans work too :)
DeleteOk, I knda really like the idea of that type of stuff - gummy bears/jelly beans/raisins etc. I'm trying that next!! Thank you!
DeleteI saw Silver Linings Playbook and really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteI really want to see that movie, I heard its excellent. . It's funny living in Portland for the last few years and seeing people bundled up when it's -2, but I'm not sure i could handle living in -40 below again (Winnipeg) Brrrrrrr, good for you running in those conditions
ReplyDelete
